I personally like the original movie version of the "I am Legend".I'm thinking it was called "The Last Man on Earth",with the late, great Vincent Price.I hope I'm right in saying that this was the first movie version of the story,if not my apologies.I didn't care for the one with Charleton Heston in it(The Omega Man) as much though, but it was still a good film in it's own right.Basically what I'm getting at here is that movies evolve over time and while the remakes might not be our favorites, that doesn't make them bad movies.I seen Will smith in quite a few sci-fi movies and I've rarely been disappointed by his performances, except for "Men in Black 2".I just didn't like him in that one, don't really know why,but i didn't.Independence Day and I'Robot were great in my opinion though,so I guess it's just a matter of personal taste.I plan on seeing the movie with him in it that is based on "I am Legend"when it comes out, just to see if they did a good job with the story, not because he's in it.I think he was chosen for the roles he's played because he is considered by the public to be popular and a main stream actor.I'm sure that the could have been other actors(or actresses) who could have also done a great job in those roles as well, but that's why they have auditions, you know.By the way, just out of curiosity, who would you want in those roles?

I would rank it higher than most, but if you include fantasy films in the sci-fi genre, then the Lord of the Rings is tops. Followed by the Matrix trilogy, the Alien series, the first Star Wars trilogy, the Indiana Jones trilogy, and the Spider-man trilogy. Granted, the first Matrix film was perhaps the best sci-fi film ever. Personally, I liked the other films, too, though not nearly as much as the original.

He's been chosen simply because of his popularity and star power. Think about it, if the producers get him instead of a white guy to star in the movie, they would also be getting the african-american audiences. Plus, women and kids like him too, so you get a broader reach in terms of audience share. He also starred in a string of blockbusters so he's got a good track record and is generally known as a nice guy to work with, no attitude or vices to worry about. What director in his right mind wouldn't want to work with that? Besides, I liked his performance in Independence Day, I Robot and the first MIB movie. Not so with the MIB sequel though, but that's probably because it was unnecessary and too full of cliches.

Independence day was a great film until the cocky, smug, whooping & a hollering Will Smith showed up. Punching that alien was soo fkn' cringeworthy. He soo ruined that film by turning into a damn comedy.

Guess he's got mass audience appeal. And a comedic element. Both of these qualities make sci-fi films more appealing to a wider audience, and so make more money for the producers!!!

Movie making involves lines of credit. I never thought much of Steven Speilburg's efforts but it would be my guess he has friends in Hollywood willing to sit down to lunch with him to discuss things. Bear that in mind.
As far as Will, I admire him as a tangible talent. Without him, the Prince of Bellaire would have flopped. However, MIB-II, Wild Wild West aren't worth a DVD rental. It would be interesting to see what and who the producers are of most of his works.

I like him. Like the first person said - he has good audience appeal and is funny. I loved MIB and I, Robot. Independence day was brilliant and I wouldn't mind if he did another Schi-fi movie.

Men in Black... yes because the movie was funny.
I, Robot... not really... could've found someone better.
