Just comparing a Toshiba Satellite Centrino (Duo processor Centrino) with 1 GB memory with an Acer (Duo processor Centrino). The Toshiba has a built-in web cam and microphone. Both have the same screen size, processor, hard drive size, O/S (Windows Vista), and the Toshiba has TruBrite screen and the Acer has a CrystalBrite screen. Both are the same price.

"quite a lot" is hard to define - as it also depends on the speed of the computer plus your hard drive size ... but in general, if you like having 4 or more apps open at once, yes, big difference ... if you want to play games, yes big difference ... as long as the price difference is not more than $150, you should get the higher RAM version ... saves you the trouble of buying and installing the RAM though you can verify your particular RAM version and "normal' pricing at dealram.com - see which way to go is cheaper though laptop ram may or may not be easy to add depending on the machine.

Memory is how much a computer can store in a logical location (This doesn't physically exists). Memory is used by applications for faster processing. Hard Drive is a physical disk and this is where your OS (i.e. Windows Vista) would be installed and all of your files would be stored. If your looking to store a hefty amount of music you'll want a big Hard-Drive. 160 GB is a reasonable size. If all your looking to use your computer for is playing and storing music you can get away with the bare bones in memory. If your running Vista I recommend at least 4GB of RAM (RAM is memory).

Well, just by saying that both your machines run Windows Vista, you'd really need the RAM. In my opinion, Vista pretty much runs like a wild pig. It doesn't get along with other things as well as it's own, and it LOVES to gobble up things. In Vista's case, it's very incompatible with other OS's and it LOVES to gobble up your RAM.

Good luck!

Yes, there is a difference. A new 1GB stick of memory goes for about $125.

If you game, or run multiple programs, say upwards of 4 you will see a huge difference.

Most of the time 1GB is plenty-however next year it might not be enough. I would get the one with 2GB ram as every year more ram is needed as programs get bigger and bigger.
