Is it that blind acceptance of propaganda relieves their obligation to think for themselves? Have they been so thoroughly brain-washed that they simply can't think independently, any longer?

Once again this is a Lee Atwater result. Atwater convinced a certain segment of white American society that despite the fact that they themselves were poor the party of the rich the Republicans were their friends

At the same time with the aide of Regan, Atwater began a general anti-intellectualism amongst the minions of the party. They made fun of and dismissed any one with an education as an "East (or West) Coast Liberal.

The elite of the Republican party of course continued to embrace education, especially higher education, but for the rank and file the idea of having a higher education became a mark that they were going to become liberals

And so they are now by an large less educated then their Democratic brethren and so are much more susceptible to not only slogans but to voting based on "non-issues" like gay marriage and flag burning.

It is my observation that Republicans, when in general conversation, present the arguments that they hear on the news...mostly Fox. So if they are to regurgitate catchy slogans and phrases, I suppose they think it makes them sound more intelligent. And its certainly easier to remember...

I often get the feeling the more slogans they hurl, the more flags they wave, the more they say they support the President and the troops and the more they mention god, everything will be just honky-dory. America, love it or leave it, you're either with us or against us. As if that makes some people more American than others.

I think there are many reasons for this phenomenon. One being they are desperate for "leadership", if you look at their idols (Regan, Bush) they all have a "Big Daddy" image. The facade of strength and infallibility. They need this in their lives as I think most suffer an Oedipus complex. They will believe whatever "Daddy" tells them to believe.

If there ever was a certain kind of person that believes anything; be it a religious person.
Anyone who believes that the world was made in 7 days and the earth is the center of the universe would probably be lead off a cliff by some deranged leader.

It's a follower mentality they have. Read "Conservatives without concience", that book explains their behavior very clearly.

Let's see, you mean "Bush lied, kids died", "big oil", "Haliburton", "Bush is worse than Hitler", "mindless repub robots", etc? Talk about blind acceptance of propaganda. You question is a classic example of "spin". Thank you for pointing it out to so many people! I'll give you my two points.
