For a professional look:
Make sure the ends are tidy, either tie a constrictor knot or whipping a little from the end or, in thin string or thread, tie an overhand knot and let the ends fray, or cut near the whipping.
Or if working with synthetics, make a nice melted end. There are special hot-knifes but the old butane splice is also working. (Only for adults!)
