The word *Philosophy* can be used in so many ways, informal and informal, and few appreciate much less are willing to refine their understanding of the word. I think what I've just said helps explain the abundance of poorly designed Q's and the frequently worthless answers posted in the Philosophy category. Philosophy is best considered a way to seek truths by reason and knowledge and an alternative to other truth searching ways like Science, Religion, and Art. I recommend going to wikipedia and beginning there expand your understanding of what philosophy is about and how one goes about doing philosophy. TWH 06102007-8

It is a quest to understand those questions that cannot be answered by science. The big and fundamental questions relating to the human predicament. It is the analysis and development of ideas, principles and wisdom of humankind from the human perspective.

I take "philosophy" to be an English word referring to a certain kind of thinking, a certain kind of approach to a certain kind of problem. To explain those "certain kind of"s would take a book; perhaps the best I can do here is gesture at what it is that English-language philosophers do.

Technically it's thinking about what people don't usually think about due to lack of absolute answers.
But it's very complicated, there's more to say about it than you can say in an answer. If you want to understand it properly you'll have to study it.
