Im going to amsterdam in a few weeks with my child. I was wondering if you could list some of the places to avoid (The location would help also). Our hotel is directly in the city center. Are there any places close to that to avoid?

Not really, the central area of Amsterdam is fun and safe. That goes for most of the city, I would stay out of any industrial areas but then you probably won't be going there anyway. There is no need to worry about crime as it's very low in Holland. Be careful about pickpockets and street hustlers, both will target you but if you keep your wits about you then there are no worries.

The Netherlands is safe. Very safe. Here and there few people die in Amsterdam of course (due to their beliefs or other) but overall its more than OK...

and when you think of the busy "down town center" think of bicycles, people walking or sitting in cafes, almost no cars, few trams, easy going life, a "laissez faire" mentality and a lay back attitude...They all speak English too. And German. And some French and fewer Spanish and some speak...Dutch. Not all (Dutch hate that)!

I hope the weather will be good. This year has been marvelous...(very often sunny and warm).

Even for a Greek like me...! Have a nice stay in Holland.
