The Spanish are the Europeans that enslaved their people.

If I was Hispanic,...I'd NEVER call myself 'Spanish', it would be an Insult to me.

First and foremost we are Americans and should be called such. I do not call myself German although that is where my ancestors came from. I do not speak German as they learned the language because years ago there was a vote and English won as the official language of the United States thus making all nationalities learn English.
When the Spaniards landed in Central America they bred with the local indians thus making the Mexican race. So, they are part Spanish.

because spanish comes from latin, and being a latino, meaning you speak spanish, implies that you are connected with all other spanish speakers. kind of a unity thing. a latino can be of any race. "Hispanic" implies that the person is partly white, from spain. Most people prefer to be called latino, or indigenous if they feel a stronger connection to their native american roots. Some mexicans refuse to be called neither latino nor hispanic. Its all preference.

I live in an area with a lot of Hispanics and Latinos. They wouldn't be caught dead calling themselves Spanish. It is wrong and an insult. So you are correct in saying that it's an insult.

The only people I know that want to be called Spanish are people from Spain. Everyone else wants to be called hispanic, latino/a, Puerto Rican, or Mexican.

i think that the Spanish who went to America didn't enslave people, they just killed most of them. so the Hispanics are probably the descendants of those Spanish and they have the right to be called "Spanish"

Only the Spanish ones do, the ones I've met from Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, etc. would most likely stab you if you called them Spanish.

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
