when Nolan Ryan was on, he was un-hittable, literally. 7 no-hitters and 12 one-hitters don't lie. Randy Johnson on the other hand, only has 2 no-hitters, but one of those is a perfect game. Johnson has five Cy Young awards to Ryan's none, but the most glaring difference is their win percentages where Johnson's .656 wins, hands down to Ryan's .526.
I'll agree with most here, any pitcher could win on any given day, and it is as true today as ever, but my money would go on Johnson to win this match-up most of the time.
it kills me to say it, i've met both of these guys. Nolan Ryan is the nicest guy you'll ever meet, and Randy Johnson is an arrogant ***.

I would have to say Randy Johnson would win because the Diamondbacks was alot better in The Big Units prime than the Rangers were in Nolan Ryans prime, but it would be a good matchup.

Nolan Ryan had a 100 mph fastball and could change his speeds of his fastballs easily, it's been said that in one at bat he threw 3 fastballs all different speeds and the batter swore up and down that he saw 3 different pitches...Randy Johnson is no where near what Nolan Ryan was, Don't get me wrong Randy is good just not as good. and some may say Randy Johnson's 2 no hits are amazing but Nolan had i believe 7 no hitters

in their prime? you do realize both these pitchers were better after the age of 35? i think at 40 had nolan ryan pitched for a better team he could have been a cy young winner and world series champion. other than bob gibson i dont think any starter was as mean or intimidating on the mound as nolan ryan. randy johnsons comes pretty close. over a 5 game series i would give the nod to the EXPRESS. In a one game matchup for all the marbles. i would give it to the EXPRESS.

This is no different than any other matchup, whether it's pitchers or teams. On any given day, anyone can win. The better question is over a series of games, who would prevail. I would say Ryan would win the best of three or five. However, if you were looking at a one game playoff, and both pitchers were at their best, I would go with Johnson.

I'd have to take the Unit over Ryan at their best. Ryan had those no-hitters but Unit had a stretch where he went 43-6 and was so wicked on left handers that they be totally screwed up for a couple of games AFTER facing him. And he was frequently injured during that stretch, too. I don't think there was ever a pitcher as dominating as Johnson during that period.

Nolan Ryan. Randy was great, but Nolan Ryan is without a doubt the best pitcher of the modern era.

Johnson would win, 1-0, as Ryan allows one run on two walks, a hit batsman, and a passed ball. Express would have one more strikeout than Unit though.
