all right as crazy as this sounds and i know the earth would freeze up but if it were planned ahead could we not create farms where plants are grown by means of hydroponics and although there would be a large amount of electricity to be generated but could it be really possible. Everything would have to be defrosted i guess. Iam no science grad so perhaps iam not weighing all the facts in - what do you think ?

How would we provide the electricity for the grow lights and heat? All forms of energy on earth start with the sun in some way.

1. Coal, Natural Gas, and Petroleum are all fossil fuels and are the remains of prehistoric organisms, which of course needed the sun to survive.

2. Wind Power would not be an option because there would be no wind without the convection currents in the atmosphere that the sun creates.

3. Geothermal energy, I guess, could be a possiblity, but not on a scale to sustain 6.5 billion people.

4. Nuclear would be another possibility I suppose, but again, Uranium wouldn't exist if it wasn't for stars.

Also, there would be not nearly enough plants survive to convert CO2 into life-essential oxygen during the photosynthetic process.

Without the sun, the earth would fly off into space until we were caught by the gravity of something else.

The nutrients you would need to add to your hydroponic greenhouse are created by living organisms that need the sun.

I doubt there is a heating system in existence that could overcome the near absolute zero temperatures we would encounter without the sun.

If you meant that without sunlight and heat, can we live, probably yes, if we have abundant energy. If you meant without sun and its gravitational field, probably difficult but not impossible. The earth will fly off into outer space and hopefully is not hit by asteroids etc. , which also may be flying off without the control of sun's gravity.

Impossible on a global scale. Where would you find energy enough to grow plants for food for 6 billion people. How would you organize all that photosynthesis?
