However, he can not SIT unassisted. If I place him in a sitting position, he will fall forward. He was born 4 weeks early, so I don't panic when he's a little behind, but it seems like his development is out of order. I have 2 older children who were already sitting at this age and did not crawl or stand until after they could sit.

He has never been in a stroller, I have always worn him or my husband has worn him on his back. He has also had very strong legs since birth and started using an exersaucer since 3 months old. Of course, he is in a sitting position in his car seat.

Anyhow, does this seem odd? Is it anything to bother the doctor over since he is developing normal in other ways?

Talk to your doctor about it his back muscles may just not be strong enough yet. You may need to talk with your doctor about getting earliy intervention to come evaluate your child. They are great my son has them come to our house they give you tips on how to get the child where they should be. He probabnly just needs a little physical therapy to strengthen thoes muscles. no worries but make sure you talk to your doctor. ~~ I wish you the best!!!

I would try a few things at home and give it a couple weeks to a month and if no improvement then see his doctor. Either his muscles simply aren't strong enough to support him--I doubt this since he's pulling up, etc, or he isn't interested in sitting still. He would rather be moving by crawling or pulling up. Put him in a sitting position on your lap--make sure his legs are stretched out in front of him and not dangling down-- with his upper body supported by your body and try to engage him in something like reading a book or playing with a new toy. Stop using the exersaucer for just a few days and see if he starts sitting on his own.

Wow it is like looking into a mirror, my son started pulling up on furniture at 7 and a half months too but he didn't start standing on his own until 9 1/2 now he is 10 months and chasing me around the room. Once he got his balance he was off to the races:) Smile and walk with your baby by holding onto her hands, then as she is walking in front of you let go of one hand but keep walking and then let go of the other slowly. I would recommend doing this on carpet and be prepared to catch her. Or sit on the floor just a foot away from where she is holding on to a coffee table and get her to come for you. BEST OF LUCK!! Remember most babies don't walk until 12-15 months

It sounds as if your baby hasn't gained muscle strength in his abdomen and back in order to support him sitting up by himself. This is not uncommon as representative of all the products created to assist this situation. Biologically, babies don't tend to sit on their own until beginning 6 mos old, so he's really not behind & nothing to concern the doctor about. My sons didn't sit on their own until 7-9 months. However, if you feel you would like a professional opinion, then call your peds office and ask for the advisory nurse. They can answer your concerns.

Though he sits in the car seat, he is only using a small amount of his tummy & lower back muscles. Think of you when your riding in the car--we aren't truly engaging our stomach muscles unless we lean forward or shift in our seats, etc.

You can assit him along in a couple of ways. One, you already have begun this by using the exesaucer but it will take time to strengthen those muscles. Though these are more used for standing and walking assistance as you have seen since he has strong legs. You can lay your baby on a blanket on the floor, placing him on his tummy, and when he pushes himself up with his arms or to look up then he will be strengthening those tummy muscles. In Yoga this is called the Cobra position and boy do I feel it! He will only be able to do this for a few minutes before becoming distressed because he can't see everything as when you're holding him or in the exersaucer. So just a few min of this a day.

Second you can get one of those soft pillow-like tubes that surrounds the baby as they are learning to sit up on their own. I believe I saw both of these at places like Target, Toys R us, Babies R Us, etc. (see links below)

Third, you can purchase one of those infant sitting "chairs" for him to use until (again) he gains the strength in the necessary muscle groups.

Lastly for no money at all, you can sit and hold your baby in your lap (with your forearm across his tummy for support) at any opportunity you get. This will give him the safety & support he needs while developing those muscle tones. An added bonus is a stronger connection with you. :) This will probably take longer than using the other products just simply because us moms have so many other things on our plate to do that holding your baby in your lap for a good portion of the day is tough. You might try doing this method first, then when he gains some (even a little will help) muscle strength use one of the other products. Good luck and hopefully in a couple months time he will be sitting on his own. Best of luck!

It doesn't seem odd to me.All babies are different and will develop on their own pace.My 7 and 4 year old never crawled but yet my 10 month is.And my 10 month old didn't start to sit up till just recently.I wouldn't bother your doctor with it.But maybe at his next apt. if he isn't sitting say something.

The only thing (IMO) thats important is crawling. The cross-pattern motion is very important in brain development.

I dont think there is an importance like that with sitting. There are a lot of toys that encourage sitting, like this one ..http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-3/qid=1181493728/ref=sr_1_3/601-7697027-6140903?ie=UTF8&asin=B00006IJJ1.. its a baby drum, it sits right infront of them in between their legs.

He seems pretty strong. Just keep putting him in the sitting position with pillows. He will be fine.
