Do not get a suckerfish, most are extremely lazy or only eat algae as juveniles. Shrimp are a good idea because they stay small, are cheap, and do not create much waste. Snails, especially large ones, will have difficulty getting any food in the crevices of gravel. Also, must suckerfish, like Plecostomus get extremely large, some more than 2 feet.
Shrimp is the answer.

I've owned a Koi for 2 years (it gets really huge) but its the only fish that i have seen chasing around fishes with poop hanging out of their anus trying to eat the poop.
It is also the only one i have seen guaranteed to eat old flakes/bloods worms off the ground. These guys dont stop eating, they will also swallow smaller fish if they can fit them in their mouth (only low quality guppies)
The other is a Plecostomus (pleco) but they are guaranteed anything they sometimes just hide in a dark place and during the night will get the occasional floor but they are very picky and can get tramatized quickly if you have a big fish or a fast one.

Freshwater shrimp and large snails are definitely your best bet. I use them both in my tanks, and the tanks look great without any algae scraping. You'll still need to change some of your water out at least once a month, but you shouldn't have problems keeping your tank clean. If you are determined to have more fish instead of branching out, try a pair of otos or SAEs. Otos are small catfish that will also help keep your tank clean; SAEs (Siamese Algae Eaters) may get bigger than you want depending on what size tank you have, but they are also great for cleaning tanks.

If you don't plan on cleaning your tank, don't get fish. There is no such thing as a fish that will clean a tank for you! And no fish eats poo! The algae eaters often backfire because they also give off waste. If you are already planning not to clean your tank, I say put it in storage.
PS, the plecos mentioned here get to be a footlong and will die the same death as your gold fish in your FIVE GALLON TANK. You don't have room to work with. Get a betta, period.

plecostomus- is the official name for the sucker fish. I have one and it eats all the algae and the excess food without harming the other fish. The bad part is that they grow fast and in a year mine has gone from 3 to 9 inches in length.

They don't eat poop, but they will scavenge the bottom for food. Ghost shrimp and cory cats make excellent scavengers.

try a small group of shrimp (ghost shrimp are super cheap). they are entertaining and take up less space than catfish and usually end up making a nice shrimp dinner for your fish when they molt.
