the bigger the hole, the more cement needed. i used an ordinary spade because I'm too tight to pay out for specialist equipment I'm not going to use again. posts are still standing 2 hurricanes later. go for it

A hole is a hole so you can use a shovel however if you are digging more than say 2, you will saave more in cement that you will spend for the post hole digger. If you are not using cement using a post hole digger will save you frustration because the larger hole dug by a standard shovel will take longer to "Set up" and the post will tend to lean.
Digging post holes is a pain, using a post hole digger is also a pain, if you have any significant number to dig, go to home Depot anr rent an auger (Sp?). Looks like a big drill bit with handles. If you are digging in sandy or fine soil have a buddy trickle water onto the auger and the dirt will stick together better and lift out of the hole.

You can dig the holes with a spoon if you like, but the post hole digger will make round and deep holes with less effort...Use the right tool for the job.

I know of a fence company (been in business for over 30 years) that only cements the end, corner and gate posts. The line posts are installed without cement. However consider the area they work is hard clay. When they run into a soft solid or sandy soil they must cement. If you attempt it, do not pound the posts in, dig the holes, backfill and tamp down as much as possible.

I would think a post hole digger would be a hell of a lot easier. I think they usually just pound the posts or poles into the ground with a sledge or something tho. Unless you are putting concrete in.

If you have several to dig... Rent the gas powered hole digger. Also call dig safe before you start. It usually takes them a few days to mark utilities.

You "can" use a shovel, but a post-hole digger will make the job a whole lot easier.

post hole digger would be the best for posts--if you put cement into a bucket, then put your posts in that then a shovel would be best to dig a hole big enough to bury the bucket
