Did the whale ever get out of the San Francisco bay?

From what I have heard they got out to sea and if something had happened to them they would have turned up on a beach some where.
If I had been in charge I would have shot then with a GPS dart or something similar.

It seems that in the darkness of the night they did make it back to the ocean from their voyage up the Sacramento river...at least according to the news reports I saw the day after (Wed.) the whales were being followed by the boat armada on the river.

What I found strange though, and this is just me, is that with the perhaps hundreds of folks spotting and following the two humpbacks, that there was no clear visual of them entering into the ocean from the bay...
One would think that, regardless of whether it was night or not, that there would be a physical observation or detection of the whales as they made it to the ocean, rather than the news reports saying "it is ASSUMED the whales made it back to the ocean".
I thought that rather strange.

For example:
"The U.S. Coast Guard sent two boats past the Golden Gate and into the open ocean to see if two now infamous whales known as Delta and Dawn have made it back out to sea.
Chopper11 attempted to find the two wayward whales in the San Francisco Bay Wednesday morning but could not.
As of 9:30 a.m. there has been no official sighting in the bay."

"When darkness fell Tuesday, they were in the San Francisco Bay, five miles from the Pacific Ocean."

I guess the point being, do we know with 100% certainty that both whales made it safely back into the ocean?

This story was all over the news and suddenly nothing!

Last Saturday morning (6/2/07) CNN was running a headline on the bottom of the screen that said a dead whale was found and they believed it to be one of the 2 that were lost in the river. I never heard any news after this and I was unable to find anything on CNN; don't know where that headline came from. Lets hope they are safely back at sea!
