I definatly agree
it's retarded, our entire systems in both society and just school systems seem to be consistently missing the point.

This law was made to ensure that all students can read at grade level. THe way to know if the students are making grade level is that they have to take state tests. These tests are NOT to see how well the student learns, they are to see how well the teacher TEACHES. The better the scores, the more money the school gets. Schools got $$$ signs in their eyes and lost all common sense. NOW, the federal gov't tells teachers HOW,WHAT, and WHEN to teach. YES, teachers have said they have to teach a specific subject within a specific time frame and if they teach it at any other time of the day they get reprimanded. The federal gov't stepped in and violated THEIR OWN LAWS, which is that STATE gov't is suppose to govern education and federal is to stay OUT of it. Teachers can ONLY teach what is on the state tests. ANd they teach this all year long. THey do not get to teach what they want to anymore. It has all come down to teachers spoon feeding info into the students to memorize, so the can pass the state tests so the schools can GET MORE MONEY. Kids have to do 'practice' tests all the time, teachers pressure them to do practice tests at home on the internet, they have parties for the ones who pass, they pressure the kids like crazy to pass, and on and on. I have heard that since these tests are only for reading and math, some schools are doing away with ALL other subjects altogether! AND, lots of schools 'cheat' on these tests so they can get more money. Teachers have been told to change the low test scores, and the admins of some schools don't even count the low scores so they can get more money. This was on the yahoo home page that this was done in GA with the approval of the GA dept of education. THe kids now do not know how to think for themselves. THey do not know how to solve problems. THey will grow up and be the future of our country, which is COMMUNISM because they will already be 'trained' to not know anything and will have to have everyone to tell them what to do. HITLER, anyone?? And WE as parents are PAYING these school people their PAYCHECK to do this to OUR OWN CHILDREN!! And MOST parents don't even know this is going on!!!

It's funny. You went to college, but you sound like a kid in school complaining about homework anyway. Homework loads are different in every school system and probably for every teacher. There are good teachers and bad today, just as there were before NCLB. I have a friend who complains that his kid doesn't get enough homework. He makes his son do extra work to compensate for what he perceives to be a lack of education.
NCLB is forcing schools to institute education that is not geared toward learning or teaching. Educators must focus on teaching kids how to pass certain tests. This is a horrible way to educate. What is happening in your school district is happening in many others. There are mandates for homework that prepares kids to pass these tests. So real education never gets a chance to thrive.
The real educational crisis in this country is not too much homework. It's the federal government's tampering with a teacher's ability to teach.

No Child Left Behind - despite it's "Media Coverage and Explanation" had little to do with increasing education and funding for resources where little was to be found.
If you read deep into the fine print of this extremely thick document, you will find that this was a cover for the real goal. Mandatory mental health screenings for our children.
Screenings that should they meet a criteria (individualistic personality, high energy attitude, high intelligence, etc) then they get recommended for medication, which renders our kids essentially zombies, takes away their initiative, gets them to fall in line with the crowd.
As much as we teach our kids to be themselves, to not fall sway to peer pressure, the liberal socialist teaching machinery that makes up the NEA and Dept of Education, encourages them to not make waves, to follow the crowd, to let the government make the decisions, etc.
Our kids are churning out dumber and dumber from public schools. Very small percentage have what it takes to really enter the work force. Many can't even do a simple addition problem in their head - need calculators.
I am so happy of my decision to homeschool. My daughter graduated with top scores in all her subjects. The state tests homeschoolers to verify they are meeting criteria, and she scored at Junior College level.
She then went on to finish a 2 year Interior Design and Graphic Artist degree in just 9 months.

Yeah..what is up with homework?
Isn't that the whole reason why we send kids to school in he first place?
I was home schooled, so I had no hhomework.
But then in college the classes that I did not get omework, were the classes that I actually remember what I learned.
Maybe if the teachers did not have to spend most of the time trying to get the kids to sit down and be quite, there would be actual teaching time!

If the teachers were allowed to teach academics instead of indoctrinating our young with liberal, social architectural, politically correct, bullsh*t, this country would be better off. The NCLB act puts some accountability back into education. Not enough, but some.

kids bringing home homework doesnt always mean the teachers are trying to have the kids figure it out for themselves- if youre concerned about your kids' teachers do that go talk to them- most schools will let you sit in- and see how they do this- it could be a case of they want them to do what they were taught at school at home to practice- or the kids didnt get it done at school- at least this way you know whether the teacher is lazy or not. *if it is the teacher is lazy- talk to the principal and superintendent- have him talk to her.

I cannot believe you are in college and you don't have any work to do outside of class. When I was in college it was expected that you'd do 2-3 hrs of work for every hour of class time. The professors introduced ideas to you, and gave you a framwork and then you read and studied to fill in that framework.
I suppose it is controversial whether giving homework to kids in younger grades makes any difference. But in High School, kids need work outside of class to learn all they need to know and to prepare for college workloads.

the reason you were successful in college was because you have the basic fundamental knowledge that was given to you by those elementary school teachers you dislike so much!!!!!
homework is about re-enforcing concepts taught in the classroom. for many students learning a skill or a concept isn't enough for mastery. it is important that they go home do the work in the comfort of their home to truly master what they had been taught!!!!!
if you think teachers are lazy you don't know any teachers!!!!!!!!

Homework loads on children have increased. As a teacher, I didn't believe in nightly homework, but rather long term projects (as one has in college). However my principal was of the belief that every child should have 20 minutes of homework per class per night.

No if you do not figure it out for your self there is no learning. To teach or present information is useless if the student is not prepared to exert themselves.
Back in the bad old day's they use too beat the lazy and indifferent today that is illegal. Since inject-able smarts have not been invented yet what is your solution for the voluntary lazy and stupid?
