First, bottle-fed babies have more problems with air in their stomachs than breastfed. This is due to the air taken in because of the bottle's nipple. The purpose of "burping" is to rid the babe of this air to prevent them from having painful gas later. Usually bottle-fed babies are burped every 2-3 ounces. But if the baby is only taking two ounces at a time - then every half-ounce to ounce. A breastfed child is usually burped between changing from one breast to the other. Both are burped at the end of feeding. Spitting up or having a wet burp is very common. The valve like closure at the top of the stomach is very weak, especially in little ones. Some have more reflux than others. Always talk to the baby's Pediatrician for concerns about excessive "spitting up." It can be distressing but often is nothing - especially if the baby is gaining weight as expected. To help decrease spitting up, feed the child less at each feeding and feed more often to decrease the amount of liquid in the stomach. Hold them in an upright position (such as an infant seat or baby-pack) for 15-20 minutes after the feeding. Bottle nipples should flow one drop at a time - about one per second. Of note - bottle nipples should flow one drop at a time - about one per second. Sometimes you will try to burp them and nothing comes - don't fret. Each child is different. You will get to know what your baby needs.

Until they burp. Spit up is caused by burping most of the time. If the baby burps and seems content then stop burping them. If they burp but still act fussy, keep patting their back. If they spit up a little it was just caused by the air coming up.

you burp a baby until they burp. because if they don't burp that could cause more spit up. also a tummy ache if not burped. a good way that helps with burping is to sit your baby on your lay ,one hand right under their chin and the other on their behind them. now just lay the baby back then sit the baby up. do that for a few times.another way is put one hand under the babies neck and the other under its bottom. now move the babies bottom around ,like in a circular motion. sounds funny but it works. good luck

the purpose of burping a baby is to release potentially painful gas.

If the baby spits up, it often means that he's eaten too much, or has been jostled around too much.
