The American Labor Movement was fueled by the Industrial Revolution, geographic expansion, and immigration.

In 1845, Elias Howe invented the sewing machine. This is an example of a machine that created many low paying jobs across the country. The unions tried to organize sweatshop workers and raise their pay.

In 1825, the Erie Canal was completed. The Labor Movement expanded along with it away from the East Coast to the West.

The 1886 Haymarket Riot in Chicago pitted immigrant workers against their employers. Some of the early union leaders also came from Europe where guilds and other unions had a stronger footing.
