Our boss makes us pay him 20% of our salaries each month, and says that if we report it, he will fire us. There are 25 of us, and he must be making well over £10,000 a month in addition to his own salary as Headmaster.

Perhaps you should cover him in a yoghurt and cereal mix and make him walk to the great wall of china!

Not even in the UK is such a thing legal unless it was stipulated at hiring and part of the contract. You know very well what needs to be done. Bad enough situation but to happen at a school? What an example for the lads and lasses...extortion 101 and cowardice 102.

Hmmm...risk being fired and winning a huge settlement in court...or keep quiet and allow someone to steal from my meager pittance? Gosh...tough choice..

I would get as much info as you can and any rcords showing this is happening then confront the boss and if you get fired get an attorney. You are paying taxes on this money why should you have to give any to him ? The taxes take enough already that money is yours!! As many of your other coworkers as you can get need to stand by your side cause if your the only one to say this and they don't want to talk you might not have a chance... Good luck

This sounds to me like an illegal deduction from pay. What is the payment for? By law, an employer is only entitled to make certain deductions from an employee’s pay. You can find information on this on the website mentioned below. If you refuse to pay an illegal deduction and you are sacked as a result, it would be automatic unfair dismissal. If you resign as a result it could be constructive dismissal. You need to take advice from an employment specialist. Check the website for information on how to do this.

It does not sound legal for any country. I know in the USA it is not. If this is for real I would report and tell them what he said. Everyone should do it together. He cant fire all of you at once!!!! He would be out of a job as well. Good luck!!!!

In the United States that is illegal. It's called extortion. Report it to the police first and then to his superiors. He can't fire you if he is already fired.

If you all report it he wont have a leg to stand on! He has no right to make you pay him anything! if he tries to fire you then sue him! if you report it you will get your money back!

report him (if what you are saying is true).
What exactly are you paying him 20 % for then? Tax is about 20% or is he bribing you?

That is illegal. You should go as a whole group to his boss and turn him in, he'll be the one fired not you.
