I think that I take things too personally and that I still need so much attention and praise even though I'm an adult. How do I start with this process and not become overly confident--just healthy. Thanks?

Well, first there are some self help books on developing self esteem that you can get through amazon.com.
You could get some psycho-therapy.
Or you could realize how much you have accomplished so far in life and realize that you are not a child any more that requires praise - that youare just doing a job, and a good job.
Learn to compliment others.
Start looking to help others and bring others to your level of accomplishment. Start looking to meet the needs of others, in a reasonable way of course, and look less and be less concerned about yourself. You made it, now can you help anyone else make it.
Keep in mind that most people are not trying to outdo anyone else, they are either trying to accomplish something for its own sake or get by. They are trying to live life and be reasonably happy.
St. Teresa of Lisieaux said something like, not everyone can perform great deeds, but you can perform little deeds with great love. Live in peace.

In order to have a healthy self esteem you need to realize that people like your prof really don't know you near as well as you you know yourself, or as well as your mother knows you. I would suspect that your prof is into controlling other people.

If you want to build up your self-esteem then I suggest you do some kind of volunteer work to help out other people who are less fortunate than yourself. In helping others you see how valuable you are to others and to the community.
