I would tend to think in terms of Jeremy Brett, were it not for the fact that I have seen every episode of the series when the detective was played by Douglas Wilmer. Here the interpretation was different and Holmes was portrayed as more vulnerable and not Superman with occasional lapses. Nigel Stock portrayed an excellent Dr Watson, which was an excellent contrast when compared to Basil Rathbone's buffoon.

Jeremy Brett is the best for me. It used to be Basil Rathbone, back in the old Hollywood days, but Jeremy Brett really brought the character alive. He will be sadly missed.

Yes Jeremy Brett is very good though a tad theatrical in his approach for my liking. (But given that he was Laurence Olivier's protege back in the 1960s that is no surprise!)
My own favourite is Basil Rathbone back in the 1930s. If you've never seen his portrayal then you've missed something rather special!

It has to be Peter Cushing. He looked, acted & spoke the part of the fine detective. He even looks like the Sherlock holmes in sketches drawn about him over 100 years ago. On the contrary
