Very hard to say due to the specialist fields of batting and bowling, and sub-divisions such as opening and middle order batting, or seam, swing and spin bowling. Also the difference between the test format and the one day game would have to be a consideration.
I guess at his peak, and for his all-round ability, I'd probably go for 'Beefy' Botham.
W.G.Grace played at a time when neither the equipment of cricket, nor the grounds-keeping and wickets had anything to do with the game today.
Fred Trueman comes to my mind, too.
In the case of Pietersen, I think it's still a little early to tell, and his part-time bowling is hardly dangerous, or economical, as the few overs he's bowled in the current test match against the 'Windies' demonstrate. He is a great batsman though, no doubt about it.

David Gower, probably the best batsman that I saw, as well as ian Botham but "greats" from earlier times would have to include Len Hutton, Jack Hobbs, Wally Hammond.

Bowlers would include Wilf Rhodes, George Lohmann, Derrick Underwood, Bob Willis, the list goes on. Ask yourself why, when you look at Tich Freeman's career figures why he didn't play more for England.

We'll in my youth years I was a big fan of England cricket team. I think Graham Gooch was my Favourite.

However Ian Botham no doubt is a cricketing legend.

Some players have been ranked #1 with the bat, some with the ball, but Botham was #1 with both... and he was an awesome fielder too.
