I want to be a lawyer - I love debate, figuring out stuff. I'm known for "thinking too much." I suck at math. I'm kinda shy. Needles and sharp things make me nervous. Every disease I read about, I figure I have the symptoms for. But everyone hates lawyers! HELP... please.

First of all, don't worry too much about stereotypical thoughts and what others will think of you.
Now I don't know you, so I could very well be wrong but it sounds like you'd rather be a lawyer, and who's to say you couldn't help with medical advances if you were a lawyer?

one thing to consider though with both is there is the chance of....unwanted emotions. as a lawyer you might assist in having an innocent man convicted of something he didn't do, or watch a guilty man walk free. I used to want to be a lawyer and the thought of that was too much for me; don't let that deter you though, I'm very thankful there ARE people who are strong enough to live with that and passionate enough to still take the chance that they might help an innocent man *stay out of jail* or they might help keep a killer off the streets.

and as a doctor, for me anyway, the lure of healing is incredibly strong.....of all the people you would meet and help and all the lives you would effect, all the pain you would decrease. but there would also be times when you would do all that you possibly could and still know the person would die, when you would have to explain a negative prognosis to the patient's family and feel like you wish you had been able to do more.

I'm not trying to discourage you, by all means, do what you want and what you're comfortable with, just offering a little personal insight.
Good luck with everything :)

p.s. needles and I aren't exactly fast friends either.

Doctor, I hate lawyers too. As Shakespeare said, "First we kill all the Lawyers". Besides Doctors actually help people. However, that is me. You do not sound like you would be a good doctor, so go and be a good lawyer. Besides not all lawyers are the lowest form of scum on the earth, just some of them. He he he.. No really do what you want to do. Even Lawyers are needed in today's world.

Then be a lawyer. But just be aware that being a lawyer has nothing to do with truth and everything to do with making the best argument. You will not be part of some process that seeks to punish the wicked and preserve the good. It's full of egos and people who want to win no matter what.

Why not something totally different? Engineer? Artist? Teacher? Be free.

Considering your aversions, don't go into medicine and
everyone does not hate lawyers, particularly the millions of
people that couldn't get through their lives without one.
Don't pick a specialty where you have to act like a referee i.e. divorce lawyer. Try entertainment law. Interesting people.

It sounds like you are more suited to be a lawyer. Don't worry about steroetypes - not everybody hates lawers. It depends greatly what kind of law you practice, and what the public image of the firm you work for is.

I was an English major.
At one time I considered law as a career.(English is the best undergrad degree for law according to an attorney I consulted)
I would not let society dictate my career choice. There are many types of law.
People like to generalize. It is easier than thinking.
