Sendai is a decent city but not great. Matsumoto, a city about 30 minutes by train from Sendai, is ranked as one of the 3 most beautiful spots in Japan.
Hokkaido is also interesting. Lots of outdoor activities. Sapporo is also an incredible city.

I went to a trip this winter to Northern Japan.
I personally liked most Matsushima near Sendai, it is as Adam mentioned one of the most beautiful spots in Japan. There are boats where the explanations are in very good English, and there's an attraction-to feed the seagulls for 100 yen. It was really fun.
There's also Yamadera in the neighboring prefecture Yamagata, it is a complex of small temples, but the most valuable is that most famous haiku poets have left a poem, carved into stone. It is very beautiful and refreshing, if you like nature and romantic spots.
There are also Hanamaki town and especially Toono village, where you can experience traditional Japanese village life, planting rice, riding horse, fishing, and there are many temples of long forgotten deities, like the god of fertility in a shape, which you'd better see for yourself. The place has great nature, too. I went also to that famous Koiwai farm, because there was snow festival, but I guess in summer they have different attractions. Koiwai's products are famous in Japan and a mark of quality.
There are also Tazawa lake and Towada lake, which are better to be seen during the summer. There are famous span near each and there is a rent- a-cycle there. If you can join the trip form Oyakata airport for Shirakami mountain, which is in UNESCO's list, you'll be very lucky. It was closed in the winter, but it is a must see!
Hope you enjoy your trip!

If you have enough time in Japan. You should visit Aichi-Prefecture. If you want only sight-seeing for old Japan, you had better go to Kyoto-City. If you want to enjoy a big city, you had better go to Tokyo.

Hiraizumi is a great place to visit. It's like "Nikko north". Tono and Yamadera are two other good spots in Nothern Honshu.
