Mastering the 7 habits of highly effective people. Consult Stephen Covey for further advice.
That said, they are hard to imbue into our system of thinking and doing unless we self-consciously discipline ourselves into grasping these paradigm-shifting habits. With a little help from my friends, of course.

A little coffee, my family, my guitar within reach, something interesting to do to fill my days, and a reason to lay down and get up the next day. It's nice to have something to ease the pain when it gets bad, and it's nice to have the computer to make my life easier, but that doesn't go into the first category. The pets are a comfort to me, especially when the family is going seven directions at once, and the T.V. is a window to the world I no longer travel quite so freely in. I probably get a little needier every day, but my needs get simpler and simpler as I trim back on my expectations and simplify my pleasures. Solving a problem is nice, but once you solve it, it generally points me to at least three other problems. That keeps the boredom at bay I suppose. I don't often get to do what I like because I have obligations to my family, to my profession, to my own sense of self discipline, but why am I telling you this? You'll find out on your own soon enough. Live, enjoy, make your decisions. They will either trap you into the life you can't imagine you chose, or refine your path until you can't wait to see what's around the next bend. I wish for you, refinement.

You likely think a lot then. As a result other areas of your life will be out of balance.
Solving a problem is not essential. Of course, if you solved the problem, you would have nothing to think about, and then find the next, or create the next problem to solve.

Well it gets more detailed as time goes on;
for instance love has always been essential to me and with a not-so-great family life it was hell for a while....but now it's not *just* "love" but the love shared between my fiance and I, and our daughter. and I agree, I can't be comfortable for too long leaving major problems unsolved. I need to be able to express myself and have things to think about. I also need music, as bad as that sounds, I get very very testy and restless without it.

Reinventing new ways of living and learning by expanding
my "comfort zone" to include a little bit of unfamiliarity, and
maintaining curiosity of all unknown things. Never losing
that little kid inside of me.

Other than basic survival, not much really. I PREFER being able to do what I want, but if I can't, oh well. When I'm dead it won't matter.
