Firmware on a PS3 means the operating system as a ROM as compared to a RAM, this is classed as firmware as it can only be updated or changed by utilising the functionalities of the PS3 and no other source.

Firmware, its a set of guidelines, or instructions telling the system how to use its components or to add fuctionality to already existing hardware. Your computer uses firmware, if you check the internet fir firmware updates for, say your CD drive, you can find some. Some of the first gen BluRay drives had a firmware update to increase write speeds on dvds and cds.

Firmware is the software (instructions) that are embedded in ROM. Many computer functions are controlled/initiated in firmware. It is semi-permanent but can be updated. An example is the firmware in your hard drive, that has the instructions for storing and retrieving information from the platters.

Firmware is the downloadable software on your console that is updated through the internet[ you can't update firmware unless connected to the internet on your console]. It fixes common bugs and adds game patches. The developer of the console makes the updates for the firmware.

Firmware is defined as:
the computer program in a read-only memory (ROM) integrated circuit (a hardware part number or other configuration identifier is usually used to represent the software);
the erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM) chip, whose program may be modified by special external hardware, but not by [a general purpose] application program.
the electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) chip, whose program may be modified by special electrical external hardware (not the usual optical light), but not by [a general purpose] application program.
