They're a bit dusty and I'm not sure what to use on them. Swiffer things didn't work.

Yes, they really are cloth...and they aren't filthy, just a bit dusty. :-)

I use a lint roller on my cloth lampshades. I have the kind that has giant sheets of masking tape that you can tear off when the roller gets dirty. I just roll it around the lampshade until the dust is gone.

Unless they are of great value throw them awar and go to walmart and get new ones. Dusting is all you can do for cloth shades, with a feather duster. Any liquid used to clean will turn the dust to stains. Call a reputable antique deeler or a museum and ask how to accomplish the job.

Usually a vacuum works pretty well.

If they are really bad, wiping just presses the dirt in even more.

A really good solution is to spend $10 on a new one, and keep it clean.

If they really are cloth, and not paper type stuff, fill a bowl with a good quality washing powder and warm water and give them a good swish round in it. Rinse well and leave to dry. Works well for me, but if they ARE paper, they will disintegrate!

If they are pleated, vacuum, then used canned air to get in the creases. If they are the flat kind, simply vacuum.
