There is any one of a number of possible causes but I'm sorry to say reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows is not likely to help. As you discovered.
The leading cause of this is power supply followed by heat.
They both cause exactly the same effect so I'll tell you about hem both.
Power. When this is the cause the solution is to put a bigger power supply unit in or remove some hardware like a spare CD ROM drive. It is caused by the fact the PC can not power all the bits at once. But assuming this problem has started happening and you have not installed anything new it could be heat.
When heat is the cause the PC is shutting down because it is getting too hot.
You best move is to get a soft brush such as a clean cheap blusher brush and pop the side off and carefully use a vacuum cleaner and the brush to clean around the CPU heat-sink which is probably getting to hot with the blanket of dust a PC can pick up.
Make sure that your case is de-dusted each year and there is a good air supply (most people box them away in a corner so they get quite hot).

The general rule here is that if this happens randomly, it's probably a hardware problem. If this happens consistently it's probably software. If you've installed software recently, you might want to try 'System Restore' to go back to a time when it was working. If the PC may be overheating you can download software to check the CPU and board temperature. these should not exceed 70 degrees c or 50 degrees C respectively. You may also want to look inside and see how dusty it is as this stops air circulating properly.

I'm no expert, but I still know a few things that might be the case.
1. A circuit may be shorting out.
2.If it's a laptop, the power source/battery may be starting to die.
3.A connection may be loose.
4.It might be overheating.
I'm not exactly sure, but those are a few examples.

The computer is ether overheating or the power supply is not working properly. After your computer shuts down, unplug the power and open it up is see if it is really warm. If it is really warm you may need and extra fan.

See if the fan has stopped running... if the CPU gets too hot it shuts off.... you can direct a blow dryer on "cool" setting to the grate on the back of the CPU, and see if that makes the machine stay "on" longer. .... and that would indicate it is a "fan" problem.

It could be any number of problems. I'm going to take a guess and say it's the hardware. Is it new? It could be overheating, something like that.
It's hard to say without more details, sorry :-(

Sounds like your computer might be overheating. You'll need to check your cooling system within your computer.
