Individually in a year bands like that can make well over 3 mil. but there's always factors that play out into how much they make.

Their actual CD sales and things generally go straight to the record company and bands rarely see any of that money ever and the only case they might get some of that is if they have a specific contract agreement stating that they receive a percent of that money. Otherwise the money generally goes to the executives at the company and the studio engineers, the studio musicians and probably the janitors at the record companies see more of the album sales money than your average band does.

But where bands really make their money is live shows and tours. Of course the larger the venue the more people can come and also the more people will likely come as well seeing that bigger bands get bigger venues to fit everyone in. The record companies are almost completely taken out of the picture at shows and almost all of the money raised at shows goes to the band and tour personnel directly. I can't even contemplate how much money bands make from merchandise sales. If you look around you today both My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy have fantastic sales numbers out there and they're likely making at least a million each from those sales. But as for merchandise sales in the stores those are actually highly reduced because of the materials needed to make the shirts and other stuff. Your average $20 MCR shirt would end up resulting in about a quarter in Gerard's pocket after all of the expenses have been paid and the money split uo between the parties involved. It's a complicated system but over the long run big bands like them make a lot of money.

It depends: do they own the publishing rights to their songs? (That's a HUGE chunk of change!) Did they put out an album this year? Did they tour this year? Did they sell a lot of merch on this tour? (That's where a lot of a bands' revenue comes from.) Was it a big production tour - with a huge stage show or just them on a stage with their guitars? (Can add or subtract hundreds of thousands of dollars a week.) Did they make videos? Were like they like movies? (some videos can cost big bucks, and the record companies don't always foot the bill) Finally: how many people does the band have on their payroll? Ranging from managers, publicists, road crew, stylists, personal security, etc.

So, at the end of the week, they don't always individually make as much as you think they do. If they have a blockbuster tour and album and can keep expenses down, they can make big bucks, but they don't go home with millions a week.
