And while we're at it, what affect do you think it had on high school drop out rates?

Illegal immigration - probably very little since their wage rate is at the whim of their employers.

High school drop out rate - possibly.

I would say it wouldn't have any effect on illegal immigration. An employer who hires undocumented workers will not adhere to the minimum wage requirements anyway. There wouldn't be a record of what the wages were and no taxes.

I don't think it will effect high school drop outs either. Anybody stupid enough to drop out of school for $7+ an hour will also be stupid enough to drop out for $5+. Their should be a class in school that covers real life and the economics of what it really costs to live that would be given in the freshman or sophomore year of high school. A subject sorely missing from our education system. That could be a great deterrent to high school drop outs.

The assignment would be covering one month: Give each student play money amounting $286 for one week at a time. They must pay back the taxes immediately. Then they should be given the minimum amount of rent, utility bills, all absolute necessities to be taken out as the month progresses based on actual averages for the area. They should have to go to the grocery store and see what they will have left and have some sense of reality of the cost of food. If they get sick or their car breaks down, this should also be taken out. Everything that comes up. The phony money would be a real eye opener because they would see there wouldn't be any left for the things that make quitting school so tempting. In fact, many would be evicted from their imaginary homes.

It will have a minimal effect on illegal immigration. Many states already have higher state minimum wages than the Federal minimum wage, many illegals work under the table so they are not effected by the minimum wage, and many illegals are already working for more than $7.00 an hour. Not all illegals work at low-paying agricultural jobs. Many work in construction and roofing jobs which pay over $7.00/hr., and some work in white collar jobs that pay much more than the minimum wage.

Because of the high number of poor, illiterate Latino illegal aliens in this country, the US high-school job out rate is higher than it would be if there were no illegals in our country. The dropout rate for Latinos is about 50%, but it is much lower for whites and asians. Also, the number of people who have no health insurance in the US would be much lower if we deported all the illegals in our country.

The federal minimum wage amendment was attached to the non-amnesty immigration bill. The bill went no where, so there is no fed min wage hike.

It won't affect illegal immigration or drop out rates.

lower back in the 1970's, 30+ years in the past, meat packers made $20 an hour and had great reward. They have been all individuals and the the remainder of u.s. could discover the money for to eat meat. as we talk the industry is crammed with unlawful alien hard artwork, the roles pay below $10 an hour and there are basically some reward. you're superb. If all the illegals disappeared the following day, and that they had to hire individuals at $20+ an hour the upward thrust in the fee of meat may well be minor.

Raising the minimum wage gives employers a greater incentive to hire criminals, for criminal wages.
