let me make this clear....3 american league mvp awards and the first player to have his number retired by a team.

The only non-Yankee to win 3 AL MVP awards is Jimmie Foxx, who won in 1932, 1933 and 1938.

The first jersey ever retired by a major league club was Lou Gehrig's #4, at a ceremony on Independence Day in 1939.

Actually , the first non yankee that won 3 AL MVP awards
was Jimmy Foxx in years 32,33 and 38...I do not know who
had there number retired first but Lou Gehrig or Babe Ruth
would make sense. Just FYI Stan Musial was the 1st NL to win 3 MVP's in 43,46, and 48....
