ok, first buy a Windows XP installation CD. then ask your local telephone line centers if they have a wireless DSL offering. ok? that's what i did in my laptop.

The laptop is ready for retirement. You might be able to get a wireless adapter in the pcmia slot to work for your internet or a modem but the machine most likely doesnt have what it takes to run xp. You need at least 256mb ram, a pent 3 or better cpu running at least at 500mhz for xp to work. At these minimums it will crawl along. I suggest windows 2000 if available for the upgrade.

Well, first thing you would need is an Internet Service Provider.

And then you would need an ethernet cable to connect the laptop to a modem, that your Internet Service Provider gave you.

Or if you only have dial-up in your area, you would need a phone line.

If the laptop is very old, do not install WinXP on it.

If you have an ethernet card you can connect directly to a DSL or cable ISP. If you have dialup contact Juno or NetZero and use their 1-800 to connect.
Juno\Netzero are dialup and cost $9.95\mo
Cable or DSL are broadband (Perferred) and start at $16.95\mo.
You will need your CD to install XP. You will need a P-II 450Mhz with at least 256mb of RAM (512mb perferred) to run XP. It will run with less but you will nt be happy with it.
I would recommend Windows 2000 pro instead of XP. More stable and uses far less resources.

You just need a windowsXP installer to install xp in it. but if the processor of the said old laptop is slow, i think its not advisable to upgrade it to xp. i dont know which country u live so i cant recommend how u can get access to the internet. you can use wifi to access the net. just buy a usb wifi and go to hotspots(spots where ur wifi can detect connectivity). Just buy cd installers of games, if thats what u want, its much cheaper. but gaming is better done in personal computers, not in laptops especially if its slow.

XP will probably not work but you can check with Microsoft. For wireless if it is not installed you need to buy either a wireless card or a USB wireless connector. For regular telephone ISP you just need to connect an ethernet wire from the port to a telephone.

If it's an old laptop...don't put XP on it. It'll run far too slow. As far as the Internet, you need to contact a local Internet Provider and pay for service. If you go with high speed, make sure your laptop has a jack for a network cable. If you go with dialup, make sure your laptop has a modem.

If it's 5 years old, you might not be able to run windows XP, it needs a minimum of 256 meg of Ram just to run Windows
It would run very slowly
To get on the internet, you would need a modem and a dialup connection for it. or if you have cable available you should be able to use a broadband connection if your cable company has it available.

Your biggest problem is that the CD drive isn't working. Without that you're not going to be able to load any software to get you on-line. Even if it has USB ports they probably won't be high speed (USB2.0) which you would need to use an external CD drive. Spec wise, it should get you on-line if you could ger the CD fixed.
