Countries, like companies, need symbols.

They have heros, like Lenin, Mao or Washington.

They have flags, which can sum up the ideals of their country....do you remember what red, white and blue stand for.

Canada has its Maple leaf, China has long be symbolised by the Dragon (actually the symbol of the Qing dynasty).

So a song works as well. It is a symbol we can all participate in....and if we don't know the words we can hum along.

In Australia.....where I am from....most people don't know the words of the national anthem and proud of the fact...so there.

Before I answer, I am not democrat or republican nor overly-liberal or overly-conservative. Some will tell you that it's for identity, or unification, or blah blah blah. It may have been for that when it was first written but it means nothing now. It's just something you have to recite before a game. It's become so ritualistic that it can't mean anything, and it certainly means nothing for THIS country anymore.

Why not have one.. what is it hurting... at least it keeps a bit of our history with us throughout the years.. so much of our history is getting lost and distorted- why not have something that shows pride in our country as well as we remember a piece of our history

for the exact same reason we need a national flag, a national animal, a national motto, etc etc, so we don't forget who we are, (we have such short memory spans)
