In this poem why did the author split the compound noun "wheelbarrow" into two words "wheel" and "barrow"?
so much depends
upon

a red wheel
barrow

glazed with rain
water

beside the white
chickens.

Looks like a stylistic choice, made to keep the rhythm flowing, and maintain it without interruptions throughout.

Words are often changed or altered in poetry through use of "poetic license" which is basically a loosening or overall abandonment of the rules of English and grammar for the sake of artistic expression.

I would guess so that the pair of lines containing "wheel" and "barrow" would match the other two couplets.

He did it so the iambic pantameter would meld with the rest of the poem
