Why is it when people come into an autoparts store and are greeted they put their head down instead of responding? Also why when people call on the phone do they ask if I can look up a part for them? That is what I am there to do. That is why I am getting paid.

FYI: I am not stressing over this I just think that it is kind of rude when someone says hello you should say hello back. I personally think that it is funny how some customers will respond to different things.

Ther'e embarrased they took there car apart on Friday night it is now Sunday and they cannot get it back running to go to work Monday. Or they just need one of those "Little Trees" air fresheners. Some times its cultural not to look people in the eyes. You can see into there soul's (scarry). And average Joe with a basic wrench set attempting a timing belt job in his driveway. I don't for the life of me imagine why those valves got bent? Or I jump started the Wife's minivan now my alternator is not charging could it have been when the battery exploded or when the battery clamps on the cables shorted and melted to the grill of the pick up?

It's simple. Smile, but wait for the customer to ask for help. They can see you standing there. Why do you think they won't ask if they need help? If your bored, polish the cash register or something. Remember, that they're the customer, and they don't owe you any greeting or pat on the back since they're already paying your paycheck. You work for them, not the other way around.

As to callers on the phone, make sure you take care of the next person in line first, whether they're on the phone or in the store. If your serving a customer in the store and the phone rings, the caller has to wait and be put on hold until his turn.

Some people are just plain rude and think they are above the auto parts counter person. But in reality you may find that they may just be a janitor in real life, this may explain why some don't respond. As for people asking whether you could look up a part for them you need to understand that when they call some auto parts stores ,they don't always get good customer service sometimes the person is incompetent in looking up the part or they may transfer them to someone eles.

Try to find some humor in your job----when they ask if you can look up a part for them, they're being polite, just how people say things. Throw them a funny curveball when they ask if you can look something up for them like......"I think our books don't go back that far". or "I can only do that between the hours of 2:00 and 2:30, you'll have to call back or come in person". Try to talk with a smile on your face---makes you sound happy they called. Some people are unfamiliar with how things work in a parts store and it's your job to put them at ease. There's all sorts of different people you'll have contact with and if you want to be good at your job, part of it is learning how to deal with different people to get the best results and sales...be outgoing and take control of the situation, they are looking to you for guidance and help most of the time. Some people have a sense of humor and others are serious minded or worried about how much they have to spend on their car. Try treating them like one of your friends and pretty soon they may be one.

Maybe you should run special 'training for customers' days! ....or at least put up a sign listing the services available, including phone part checking.
Folks can be weird sometimes!

Not something I've noticed, but then again my experience is small town Oklahoma, where everyone knows everyone and talks to strangers if they don't know them. If your experience is different, perhaps it's based on location?

try changing your greetings until something else gets a different result consistently.
May be a cultural thing anyway.
