Good question. The word religion means to "tie back to the source," so anything that ties us back to supreme intelligence is a true religion. The monks and yogi's did it in stillness (surrender).
Real religion has to improve your life. If it does not, then it is just posing as religion.

..the Real Religion never fights with other concepts, beliefs and claim supremacy,
..the Real Religion never seek conversions; it only shows how to get transformed in the self.
..the Real Religion does not need Popes, Ayatullahs and persons of such kind.
You need not believe God, for once you come to know your self, this question gets answered.
