Tabula Rasa 3rd episode aired on October 6, 2004
Kate turned up in Australia. Using the name Annie and claiming to be Canadian, she arrived at the house of an Outback farmer, who, in exchange for help around his farm, offered her a wage and a home. Months later, in the middle of the night, Kate attempted to sneak out of the house. The farmer interrupted her in this attempt, and insisted he drive her to the train station the next morning.
On the road, their truck is followed by Edward Mars. The farmer admitted that he saw Kate's picture on a wanted poster at the post office and turned her in for the cash reward (later revealed to be $23,000; 23 is one of the numbers). Kate grabbed the wheel and drove off the road, rolling the truck. Despite being free to escape, Kate pulled the injured farmer away from the wreck, giving the marshal time to capture her.
Immediately prior to the flight, the marshal revealed to an Australian law enforcement officer that he had been chasing Kate for three years, and he had put the toy airplane in the safe deposit box as bait. He now had the toy airplane in his possession, presumably having recovered it from Kate's possessions after capturing her.
On board Flight 815, she was sitting handcuffed beside the marshal. Just prior to the crash, she asked the marshal for a favor, which she later claims was to make sure the farmer received the reward for turning her in. As the plane broke apart, the marshal was injured. Kate stole the keys to her handcuffs, but made sure to apply the marshal's oxygen mask before putting on her own.

At the beach, the tide is rising and will soon submerge the fuselage. In a flashback, Kate is in New Mexico, opening a bank account using an alias ("Maggie", "Meg", "Miss Ryan"). Three masked men enter and attempt to rob the bank. One of them pulls Kate into a back room and they share a kiss, revealing that Kate is a part of the robbery. The man hits Kate to make it look as if she's an innocent civilian. Kate admits her involvement in the robbery to stop the man she kissed from hurting the bank manager. She then demands that he give her a key to a specific safety deposit box — the true reason for the robbery.
Kate goes to Jack and says the case contains weapons. It belonged to the U.S. Marshal and the key is buried with him. They dig up the body and Kate pulls out his wallet. Before giving it to Jack, she palms the key, but he catches her. Sayid becomes impatient with Shannon when her translations do not make any sense. Upset, Shannon runs away saying that she's useless. Jack gives Sawyer an ultimatum: if he does not hand over the case, Jack will stop giving him antibiotics for his knife wound. Sawyer gives him the case.
In a flashback, one of the robbers tells the manager that the whole robbery was Kate's idea. However, she shoots the felons and tells the manager to open the safety deposit box #815. At the caves, Jack and Kate open the case. There are guns inside, and a manila envelope, which Jack gives to Kate. She opens it and pulls out a toy airplane. Sawyer begins to mumble, and as Kate leans in to hear better, Sawyer grabs her by the neck and says, "You killed me. Why did you kill me?" Kate bumps into Charlie in the jungle and asks if he thinks there are horses on the island. Jack tracks her down and accosts her for leaving the Swan hatch. In the ensuing confrontation, Kate shouts, "I'm sorry I'm not as perfect as you. I'm sorry that I'm not as good." Jack pulls Kate close and holds her. Without warning, Kate kisses Jack passionately and then runs off into the jungle. Jack calls after her but does not follow.
A series of flashbacks explain Kate's crime. A twenty-four-year-old Kate is sitting on a porch playing with a cigarette lighter when her stepfather, Wayne Jansen, arrives inebriated. As Kate helps him to bed, he complains and makes advances towards her. As Kate rides away from the house on a motorcycle, the house explodes. She rides to a diner where her mother, Diane Jansen, works. Kate confronts Diane about an injury caused by Wayne and then presents her with a homeowners' insurance policy, telling Diane that she'll be taken care of.

Following Kate's confession, Sawyer awakes as his normal self, and his comments reveal he has heard the whole conversation. Kate is embarrassed but relieved. She shows Sawyer around the Swan hatch before taking him outside to prove that they have not been rescued. As the two talk, the black horse reappears. Kate approaches and pets it, and after a moment, the horse walks back into the jungle.

While Kate and Sawyer are working, a warning sounds; it is a compound breach.Suddenly Alex runs out of the jungle holding a slingshot and firing rocks, demanding to know where her boyfriend is. She is grabbed from behind and taken off. She shouts to Kate not to trust anything they (The Others) say and that they will kill her boyfriend just like they killed hers, probably referring to the boy who formerly occupied Kate's cage.
Juliet tells Kate that Pickett is going to kill Sawyer, but if Kate can convince Jack to do the operation, she can save Sawyer's life. When Jack and Kate see each other, emotion overcomes them. Kate tells Jack he has to do the operation. Jack demands to know what they did to get her to ask him, and she says that they are going to kill Sawyer. Jack gets angry and refuses.
Kate tells Sawyer about seeing Jack and what they want him to do. Sawyer is glad Jack is not "dumb enough" to do the surgery. Kate gets angry, climbs out of her cage and breaks open Sawyer’s, saying if he does not want Jack to save his life then she is going to save his own. Sawyer then tells her that they are on another island; there is no place to run. Kate kisses him. Sawyer is surprised, kisses her back and they go on to have sex. After, Sawyer asks Kate if she really meant it when she said she loved him. She does not say anything, but kisses him. He then says "I love you too" and they keep kissing as the scene ends.
As Jack is preparing for surgery, Ben asks Juliet if Alex asked about him. Juliet answers "no". Jack starts the surgery and once Ben is drugged, Pickett goes after Sawyer. As he leaves the operating room, he says that Ben just put his life in the hands of "one of them" and that Shephard (Jack) was never even on "Jacob's list". He discovers Sawyer and Kate together and forces Sawyer to his knees with a gun to his head. He is ready to kill Sawyer in front of Kate when Tom calls over the walkie. Jack has sabotaged the operation and says Ben will die in an hour if they do not let Kate go. Jack tells Kate to run. When she is safe, he wants her to radio him and tell him the story he told her on the day of the crash when she stitched him up. Kate does not want to go without him. However, Jack tells her to run. Jack is not aware that they are on a separate island and his last words are "Kate, damn it, RUN!". The episode ends.
In the first flashback, Kate checks into a hotel room and looks at her wedding veil. A policeman, Kevin, knocks on the door and demands to be let in. When Kate opens the door, she jumps into his arms, we learn that they are a couple and are to be married in 12 hours. Kate, or Monica, as she is known as to her soon-to-be husband, has a moment of doubt, but Kevin assures her it is right and real because he loves her. Before her wedding, Kevin's mother, Suzanne, gives Kate a gold locket that had been passed down on the female side of the family at weddings. Kate tells her that "mothers-in-law aren't supposed to be so nice."
During the ceremony, the Minister talks about Kate's honesty and faithfulness, and how what you see is what you get. A while after the ceremony, Kate calls U.S. Marshal Mars. She does not want to run any more and pleads for him to stop chasing her. He guesses it is about a guy. She tells him she loves the guy and the Marshal says that if Kate can really stay put, really settle down, he will stop chasing her, but that they both know it is unlikely that Kate ever will stop running. Later, we see Kate looking at the results of a pregnancy test: negative. She shows signs of relief. She finally tells Kevin she is a fugitive on the run for killing her father. She drugs Kevin and leaves.
Left Behind Season 3 Episode 15 62nd episode aired on April 4, 2007
Kate is held captive by the Others. When Juliet comes to bring her food, Kate attempts to attack her, but Juliet quickly overpowers her. Soon after, Locke comes in to say good-bye and that he is leaving with the Others. Locke tells her he does not want to go home; he explains that he made a strong case for her but then they told him who she was and what she had done.
In a flashback to Iowa, Kate's car breaks down and is towed into a service station. She overhears a man and a woman arguing. The woman is Cassidy, whom Sawyer trained to be a grifter and all of whose money he stole. She is working the jewelry con on the man. He is not buying it and wants to call the police. Kate tells the man her father was a jeweler, and the jewelry is not fake. They have drinks together and Cassidy asks why Kate did not want the police there. Kate says her stepfather was a bad man, so she killed him, escaped from the US marshal, who arrested her and now she is back to talk to her mother. Cassidy offers to help. She says she was conned and embarrassed by a "bad guy," too, and that one of them deserves something good.
Kate hears a loud bang, and looks outside in time to see the Others packing to leave. They all put on gas masks, then the door to the recreation center flies open, someone tosses in a canister and slams the door shut. The canister pops open and gas starts fuming out, knocking her out cold. She wakes up in the jungle, handcuffed to Juliet. Kate takes Juliet's knife and tries unsuccessfully to unlock the cuffs. Kate says they are going back for her friends.
She follows a trail leading to the barracks. They hear the roar of the smoke monster, and quickly run into the roots of a banyan tree for cover. The Monster roils up in front of them, and Juliet's face is lit up by a series of bright flashes of light. The monster then retreats, leaving Juliet terrified. Then, as Kate calms Juliet down, Juliet reveals that Jack told Kate not to come back for him, not because he does not want Kate to be harmed, but because she broke his heart. They end up getting into a fight, and Kate dislocates Juliet's shoulder before popping it back into place for her.
Back in Iowa, Kate knocks on her mother's door. Diane opens the door, but before she can say anything, cops surround Kate and cuff her. Federal Agent Mars walks out only to realize that it is not Kate; it is Cassidy dressed as Kate, who claims to be just selling Bibles. Watching through binoculars from down the street is the real Kate, and she realizes just what she is up against. Later at the motel, Kate admits that her mom gave her up to the police, choosing her abusive husband over her daughter, betraying her, and Kate needs to know why.
Cassidy goes to the restaurant where Kate's mom works and 'accidentally' dumps a bowl of chili on her. Diane goes to the bathroom to clean up; Kate is waiting there for her. Diane tells Kate that she killed the man she loved. Kate replies that Wayne abused her, but Diane simply snaps back that she didn't kill Wayne for anyone but herself. Diane promises not to say anything now, but the next time she sees Kate she'll yell for help.
Kate and Juliet continue to the barracks; however, the monster returns. They take off running, and come upon the pylons. Kate jerks Juliet to a stop, says they cannot go through them. Juliet reaches into her back pocket, takes out a key, and unlocks the cuffs. She then runs to a pylon, enters an access code on a key pad, and they run across the barrier. Juliet jams the setting into the red zone. The monster zooms in and bounces off the barrier. It roils and rises, making awful noises, and is unable to pass through the fence. Then it quickly shoots away. Juliet admits that they do not know what it is, but they do know it does not like their fence. Kate asks about the key. Juliet says she was left behind, too, and by people she knew and trusted. She hoped that if Kate thought they were in it together, Kate would not leave her behind in the jungle like they did. Kate unlocks her cuff, and they continue on.
Kate and Juliet reach the barracks. It is completely empty; everyone is gone. Juliet goes to get Sayid, and Kate goes to get Jack, finding him unconscious on the floor of his house. Kate wakes him up and tells him the Others left because of her. She apologizes for messing up his plans to go home.
In a flashback to Iowa, Cassidy drops Kate off at the service station. Cassidy tells her she is pregnant. She wants the guy dead, yet she still loves him. Kate says call the cops and have him locked up. Cassidy asks if Kate would forgive her mom for calling the cops. Kate says no, but that this guy has it coming.
Back at the Barracks, Jack's first question is about Juliet, and Kate pulls back emotionally, telling him that they left her, too. They join Juliet and Sayid. Jack suggests taking what they can find and starting back before dark. Sayid objects to Juliet coming with them, but Jack is insistent. Kate and Sayid trade looks, both worried about this new development, and head out.
