It's for accessories. The only thing it currently supports is the USB to Ethernet adapter, however EA has confirmed a USB microphone for it that will be packaged with the upcoming game Boogie.
It is also possible to charge and power electronic devices through it such as iPods and phones, but not transfer data.

It's for the Nintendo Wii LAN adapter if you don't have a wireless router. If you do have a wireless router, your all set to go on the internet. :)
