Most animals don't do it (dogs, elephants)...but hamsters yes. Obviously, not a proof of supreme intelligence.

Yes cats are smart. They realize that they excrete the single most vial, repugnant, and sickening substance expelled by any creature on this planet. They cover it because it even makes them gag.

I suspect this act is primal instinct, dating back when cats were feral and not domesticated yet. Probably the biggest issue was trying to cover up their scent from predators. Sometimes it is hard to break old habits.

First off, cats don't bury feces. They cover it with the surrounding dirt and vegetation. Feces is the proper term for animal excrement from the anus.

Cats cover feces to reduce the scent. Therefore protecting it , the cat, from predators. But most important, confusing other cats.

So predators can't track them a easily, which is much smarter than most animals. They also spend considerable time washing after eating for the same reason, can't smell 'em can't eat 'em.
