I don't know what the percentage of over weight people in America are but I know most of the people I know are average or thin. I do have two or three friends that are trying to lose weight. The kids I see that are fat I think spend too much time inside w/computer games.

Actually, I just read an article that says 75% of the people in Britain are fat, and more are malnourished.
I suspect the culprit is convenience foods, the take out/away, processed, or frozen meals, and isn't limited to any one country. If you ever look at the ingredients about the only thing they have going for them is they're fast...certainly not nutritionally sound.
It appears the more "convenient" we make our lives, no matter what country we're in, we run the risk of destroying the very health we've gained through "progress".

It seems like many factors play into increased obesity in society...
(a) sedentary pasttimes: watching TV has grown to be commonplace at times when exercise (formal or informal) could be happening.
(b) Speed of life: life has begun to move faster for many people, making it difficult to prepare healthy meals or make time to work out.
(c) Lack of health education: many high schools require only 1 semester of health, even though you'll have your body for life and only have a biology class bunsen burner for as long as you're in school. To learn healthier habits, one must have more correct information.
(d) Eating at restaurants: Again, with less time to prepare foods at home, it can be found to be easier to eat fast food (loaded with fat, calories, and sodium) and at restaurants. Restaurant eating is very deceiving because what is served as a portion size really may count for many servings. Most people don't want food to go to waste, but don't think of alternative ways to save it, like requesting a half portion of the menu item or asking a friend to split one.
(e) "Quick Fix": it's a "look for the quick fix" society. People would rather find a pill, capsule, or surgical procedure to take off weight than to dedicate time & energy to making healthy lifestyle changes. While they wait for the "quick fix," they do more damage by doing nothing.

Not all Americans are fat, you have been watching to much TV but the ones that are fat probably got that way because we are spoiled - we have to many luxuries and do not have to wait for anything, including food. Every civilized nation is struggling with obesity now, to many conveniences.

Science has made everything too easy for us. TV/video/dvd remote controls, self opening garage doors, everyone drives a car, dishwashers, clothes dryers, vacuum cleaner, take away food in 2 minutes, work done by computers. All these labour saving devices mean we get no incidental exercise. People even get other people to clean their houses and mow their lawns.

Well, in America we have money and food in abundance so we are tempted by the fast food evils as we have time in limited amounts. Vicious circle.
