The general rules are, you can join this club if you have sex in a aircraft that is flying about 1 mile high.
But the real original rules for the Mile High Club are as follows.
You must be in control of the plane (that is, you are the pilot)
You must have sex with someone who you have never had sex with before.
You must have done this in the last year.
So most people claiming to members of the mile high club aren't really.
The origin of this phrase is uncertain. It may have been sexy novel of the same name that specified these rules and in the story there was an actual club. But the rules are different from what I just said.
I think it is more like an urban myth that has been embellished by various people, stories and so on over time.
