i dont know chemical tech. but i am doing ms on chemical engineering and i can tell u a few things about chemical engineering.
as a chemical engineer u have to know about mathematics design, some general engineering courses such as fluid mechanics.
it has a very spread interesting area, from the bacteria to huge reactors operating at very extreme conditions. chemical engineers may take a part in most of the industrial processes.
most exciting part in my point of view is the design part all of these huge facilities designed by chemical engineers the capacities of the reactors, the diameters of the pipes that is going to be used, flow rate of the reactant streams, heat exchangers and so on ... they all designed by design engineers. that requires a very good knowledge of mathematics, basic chemical engineering such as transport phenomena ( heat transfer, mass transfer, momentum transfer), at least u must be very good at using MS EXCEL or other software programs, thermodynamics...
u can also participate as a researcher for example i am doing a reasearch on treatment of industrial dye effluents. i am investigating the reaction kinetics of a heterogenous system (include solid catalyst besides liquid phase reaction) and its effectiveness on dye and organics removal for my thesis. some people works on alternative energy, some of them works on biotechnology, biotechnology can also be an interesting area they simply use the microorganisms to produce something for them, i can not list al the areas but there are alot of interesting areas about chemical engineering but it takes a very hard work. to graduate and after graduation. u also take a great responsibility when u work for a company u take the responsibility for the workers. so it is a very hard disipline but if u like it, it can be so exciting and enjoyable :).
i can tell u the difference between the science of chemistry; we dont know the chemistry as well as the chemists but as far as i see they dont know mathematics and calculations like us.
if u like chemistry, mathematics and physics cources u can try ur chance on chemical engineering:)

The difference is a great number of difficult courses. Chemical Engineering has long been considered the second most difficult branch of Engineering to master. Chemical technology, on the other hand is the assembly of devices and systems designed by Chemical Engineers. It requires a completely different set of skills, and generally doesn't pay as much.

Chemical engineering is applying the science of chemistry. It mostly has to do with working with materials. Google engineering so you can get more familiar with it. Chemistry would probably just be theoretical chemistry, since there's no other real need for it.
