I want to try working on a small scale mixed-farm (i know it's hard work) but am having difficulty finding oppertunities. Ideally a family run operation. The only ones i've found are through organizations where I'd pay them for the "experience". I'd be okay working in exchange for room and bored but I'm certainly not going to pay for the privalige of working 10- 12 hour days. Any ideas of where to look. preferably in western canada

In the US, you would start looking at your local Agriculture Extension Office. If Canada has something like that, that's where I recommend you begin. They will know of small farms that need help.
