the same reason natural ice is rarer than water. diamonds need certain conditions to form. these conditions are high pressure and high heat and tey are not met everywhere on earth. graffite is the standard form

Diamond and graphite are essentially the same substance. The only difference is a bunch of 90 degree angle bonds. Diamond is graphite that's been organized by having their bonds from purely random to nice and neat bonds at perfect 90 degree angles. This process requires heat and pressure.
In order for this process to occur that graphite would have to be in the right place at the right temperature and compressed under that right pressure. That's a lot of conditions that has to be met thereby being more rare than graphite. Graphite is nothing more than organic material that's been decomposed for millions of years. Since we've had organics for billions of years we would be led to believe that there are plenty of coal around as apposed to diamonds.

Graphite is thermodynamically more stable at room temperature and atmospheric pressure due to the presence of delocalized electrons (sp2 hybridization in graphite vs. sp3 in diamond). Diamond requires high temperature and pressure to form; because it is more dense than graphite, its formation is thermodynamically favored at high pressures.

diamonds is not as rare as we are made to believe it is, and we cannot distinguish between an artificially created one from the naturally occuring ones unless you can whip out your jewelers scope nd scope each and every diamond you meet.. That will land you either in jail or the nuthouse.
