I want to be able to use my ADSL on my other computer. Can I do this using just an ethernet cable?

I am thinking of getting a PCI external ethernet card (since the ADSL modem uses my only ethernet slot) and connecting the two computers with an ethernet cable. Do you think it would work or do I simply HAVE to get a router?

It would be alot easier with a router as you wont need to keep your other PC on. It would also have an easier set up.

Hi, since the price for broadband router already dropped real low, I suggest that you are using a broadband router instead of doing what are you're up to.

These are some consideration if you're running your plan
(as in your question above):

1. You should have one PC as master. Setup for the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) or any other proxy server.
2. Cost for electricity (router only use small power consumption in compared with PC)
3. If you shutdown the main PC, the rest of PCs can not connect to the Internet

Of course the price of UTP cable and NIC card is still less expensive than purchasing a router. But since I notice that you've posting the same problem on different question/title, it's maybe that you need to get some confirmation before you doing that :)

If it's true and you have big curiosity on doing that (let says for experiment and got some pleasure to do that), please do so. Because it WOULD WORK :)

You are much better of with a router, but you could do this if you insist on making life difficult. You will need a cross-over cable to connect 2 machines direct. Then set up a sensible workgroup name on both machines and internet connection sharing on the modem connection. Set the other machine to connect via another pc. This can be done from the network setup wizard.

You need to get a router. The cheap way involves a lot of software as it involves adding ANOTHER network card, AND installed Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Router is MUCH simpler and foolproof.

yes. you have to have a router

ok. I lied. but it makes life sooooooooooooo, I mean sooooooooooo much easier.

the guy above me is right. but routers act as a firewall, dhcp server, and you can just leave it there and it will breath internet to both comps without you worrying whether its on or not. plus you don't have to waste your computers resources as it tries to act as a router itself.
