In the 60's hippies were in a minority...Main stream America was innocent and trusted the government. Hippies were considered care free, poor beggars, dirty and not intelligent. Side doors were to keep them out of sight from the general public, because they'd create a stir among the straights.

Hippies Use Side Door

In the 60s bar and restraunt owners thought that the hippies' bad hygeine would lure away customers so they posted signs for the hippies to use the side doors. They got more business this way (I know it sounds weird but its true)

It's a misconception that hippies were dirty. I was a hippy/lived in a commune and I showered every day. Yeah, you walk around barefoot and your feet get a bit dirty, but we pretty much wore shoes everyday too (unless we were at the park playing guitar). "The Man" just didn't dig our vibe and wanted us to take a back seat, just like Rosa Parks. ;)

LOL, they meant exactly what they said. Dressing like a hippie and listening to the same music and whatnot was one thing, but actually living like a hippie was somewhat not clean, lol. They weren't considered desirable customers and so the idea was to not scare off the "better" clientele. And seriously, if you ran a restaurant would you want a bunch of barefooted, greasy haired, rather smelly folks sitting at your front table??

This is a fabulous question. The first time I saw that sign was in a coffee house in Amsterdam. They don't want the raggle taggle to be seen coming in the front door. It's bad for business. Oh god no don't let people see the free thinkers, their nonsense might spread!!!! Or I could be wrong, but this was a really good question for 337am

If the hippies wore clean neat clothes and combed their hair and wore shoes, nobody would know who they were.

Some restaurants require jackets and ties. I have no problem with a business having dress standards.

They didn't want us "grungy" hippies mixing with the regular customers, in restaurants, or in the restrooms. I must say, those were absolutely great times!
