The Scottish word "golf" comes from the Dutch word "KOLF" for "stick, club, or mallet." There is an urban legend that says "golf" is an acronym for "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden" dating back to the 1400's. A joke going around says it meant that sometimes the men players wanted to play in the nude, so this sign "G.O.L.F." was posted at various places around the course so women wouldn't accidentally see them playing this way. :)
