I don't know about a "hero" per se but, someone that I've admired and always enjoyed listening to and reading many of his books is Carl Sagan the renouned American astronomer and astrobiologist and highly successful popularizer of astronomy, astrophysics, and other natural sciences.
If you don't know Carl Sagan you might remember his voice...
Listen as he talks about the Pale Blue Dot (Earth)...

I credit him for being an inspiration that has kept my interest in space, exploration and the prospect of life in other parts of the universe, alive.
Carl Sagan was the driving force behind the development of the SETI Project (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence).
He passed away at the age of 62 on December 20, 1996.
The 1997 movie Contact, based on Sagan's novel of the same name and finished after his death, ends with the dedication "For Carl."
Carl Sagan, you are missed.
