Does too much estrogen cause cramping the weeks prior to a period? Does progestrin reduce cramping but lead to heavier period? Can they cancel each other out (strike a balance) given the right combo for a particular person? Am I on the right track or do I have this backwards?

From personal experience I found that when I didn't have enough estrogen and would bleed that when heavy enough I would have really bad cramping. I found from that experiment that I knew I could never take progesterone only pills because of the heavy bleeding.

This would also be a good question for your pharmacist to see what they know til you can get a hold of your dr next week to see what they say on this as well.
