Don't worry, I'm not pregnant and I am strongly against abortion. I watched a show and it mentioned back alley abortions, and I was just wondering what they are and how they are done. Thanks! :)

back alley abortions is a very DANGEROUS VERY BAD and CRUDE surgical procedure that may causes a lot of PAIN and SUFFERING to poor innocent pregnant women of our times, according to dry pufssy feminists, if all women are not allowed to destroy human life dependant on their body, LEGALLY for any whim and fancy of theirs (such as its not convenient to have a baby now as I already have 2 pet dogs and a flower garden to take care of). The argument against controlling abortions and legalizing it for MEDICAL and ETHICAL REASONS only is that, poor innocent suffering pregnant women will then seek the help of back alley abortions.

It is like saying, lets legalize killing people with cyanide, otherwise, criminals will resort to very crude methods and innocent people will get killed by very CRUDE and PAINFUL methods like clubbing etc.

back alley abortions and abortions for other than medical reasons should be made illegal and controlled like any other criminal activity like violence and theft.

Back alley abortions were very popular in the days before Roe vs. Wade. Women/girls that wanted abortions could not do so legally. So they literally went into major cities and knocked on the doors of completely strangers. Many of these people were not doctors, some were. They would perform the abortion with a coat hanger. Use you imagination on that one. Or other sharp objects.

It was very unsanitary, painful, humiliating and wrong. Women often miscarried and bleed for days. Some got horrible infections. When they decided to finally have children, they could not. The procedure had badly damaged their reproductive system. So even died from infection. Some got STDs for unclean areas. It was even more emotionally and physically draining then today's procedures.

I would never have an abortion. However, I'm pro-choice. I won't want to see these back alley abortions. We are a country that has separation of church and state. I say let people choice how they like. It's more cruel to let these women suffer and be fearful.

The term "back alley abortion" was coined during the time when abortions were illegal. So that basically means performing an abortion in much the same way as now with much, much cruder methods.

It was the practice of causing miscarriage through methods that was not under the help of physicians. You could kick someone hard in the stomach, induce labor by penetrating the cervix (with something like a hanger or other unsterilized tool) or give miscarriage inducing drugs.

Besides what other people have said, about it being dangerous and unsterile and using things like coat hangers, let me add a couple of things. Because it was unregulated, some of the "doctors" would rape patients first, and the women had to submit, because otherwise they could be hurt or killed. It was expensive and dangerous and women died from it. There's a really dreadful picture on the Internet of a woman lying on a floor dead after an abortion before it was legal. Making things illegal doesn't stop it, it just makes it more dangerous and it gives criminals a new source of illegal income. It's better to have it legal and regulated. Also, I think that there are tens of millions of pro-lifers in this country, and 100,000 children who want to be adopted, and the pro-lifers don't seem to be adopting those children, so why do they want more unwanted children in the world? Being against abortion seems to mean wanting to punish women for having sex.

A "back-alley" abortion refers to an illegal abortion, particularly before the Roe v. Wade decision of 1973. They were no different from any other abortion as far as technique; however, they were often carried out in less-than-sanitary conditions due to being illegal and therefore clandestine. Also, they were commonly performed without anesthesia, as the people who performed them were unable to get such drugs without a legal reason.

Back-alley abortions were a huge cause of maternal death before abortion on demand became legal in 1973.

Because abortions here in the U.S. are legal there is no longer a "need" for back alley abortions. They were performed before Roe V Wade, before the legalizaton of abortions. They were performed anywhere using ANY type of "instrument", from coat hangers to button hooks, to crow bars. Anyone willing to pay the price could get one and they weren't guaranteed, many women bled to death on butcher blocks in animal slaughterhouses and gas station garages.

My grandmother once told me that back in her time, it wasn't uncommon for women to receive abortions from someone other than a doctor. Basically a wire hanger is stretched out straight, inserted into the vagina, through the cervix, and into the uterus. The hanger is then moved in a sweeping motion, causing the fetus to dislodge and pass though the birth canal. As you can guess, this is VERY dangerous and I have no doubt that it killed many women, caused many birth defects, and damaged the woman's internal organs beyond repair.

generally this was done before abortions were legalized and i think the prefered method was with a coat hanger.
i really hope people are not that stupid anymore.
this caused many problems, infections, sterilization and even death.
this is part of the reason abortions became legal.

Abortions that were done when abortion was illegal...frequently using a coat hanger. As horrible as this was many more women have complications from legal abortions than these.
