I don't know much about networking and thought I would ask this question, although it may sound trivial to most.

Basically I am wondering if I connect my laptop and desktop to a linksys modem box, can I use the programs from computer to computer? For example, I have Photoshop on my desktop and don't want to place it on my laptop so can I network my computers so I can use the program like this?

If using programs is not possible I am curious if networking is mainly for sharing documents?

Thank you for the help!

Networks can do all kinds of things

they CAN be used to share documents. I share movies within my network. I can watch any of my movies from any computer. its really nice. I bought a vid card with tv out. so they're pumped to my big ol TVs.

Some networks allow you to use the CPUs together. So I could have 3 computers working (2 dual cpus and 1 single) thats 5 CPUs) on one project. Helps me with speeding up 3D rendering. You need to learn linux though. Its the only OS that can do it as far as I know.

I also share the signle cable internet connection with all three computers. Sweet.

but to get more direct to your question, Yes. program sharing is possible. (I know there are other ways, but I can't recall off the top of my head)
I use remote admin 3.0 (Because its seamless)

so I can "use my other computer" from my otherother computer. it works great. I spy on my kid's net movement that way too. She's six and needs come guidance.

I wish someone would tell me how to share programs easilier too!! tell us HOW

You can connect your laptop and desktop on a local network like that. If you want to sit at your laptop to access stuff on your desktop, you would have to share and give permissions on the files/folders inside of your desktop so that you can access them through the laptop. You can even get a wireless network card for your laptop (not so tethered w/ wires then, lol) and still access the same way, pretty much.

If you want to control the other computer, you can just remotely access it and then do whatever you want.

Btw; networking can be used for almost anything...there are all types of network setups and for different purposes. Basically, anything you can do with one computer can also be done on a larger scale with more computers.

you can transfer files and share programs on all machines.and have your computer fixed by remote access.
you can do this by direct cable or wireless.
you have to install a wireless card and modem and router in all units and service provider or connect by a 10/100 card to modem

You're correct, it is mostly for file and printer sharing. Also, for example, when sharing a printer, you stilll need to install the software on both machines in order for them to actually work.

It is also used for internet connection sharing.

Cheers!
