I like books with aliens and a lot of adventure. Any titles come to mind?

Personally, I love the Vorkosigan series by Lois Mcmasters Bujold. It can be started at "Shards of Honor", the first book, or "The Warrior's Apprentice", which is the first one actually about Miles Vorkosigan. Terrific adventure, but no aliens. I also love the "Uplift" books by Brin - loads of aliens, plus genetically engineered intelligent dolphins and chimps.

I would second the recommendation above for "Ender's Game", a wonderful story. I would also recommend Herbert's "Dune" and Pohl's "Gateway". All of these books have multiple sequels which are often not nearly as good.

Hamilton's Reality Dysfunction series is very exciting and worth a look. It's one where you pretty much have to read the whole series in sequence, because it's essentially one very long novel. Niven's Known Space novels are another excellent series, one that doesn't necessarily have to be read in sequence as the individual books can stand on their own.

For adults only, "Steel Beach" is one of my all time favorites. Also pretty much adults only, with lots of aliens, "Perdido Street Station" is a strange and marvelous book.

Among older works, almost anything early by Heinlein is terrific. Asimov's Foundation series deserves it's reputation as a masterpiece. "Slan" by Van Vogt and "More Than Human" by Sturgeon are superb.

The three acknowledged grand masters of science fiction are Isaac Asimov, Arthur C Clarke and Robert A Heinlein. Of the works of these three, the best known is Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I'm (ever so slightly) more fond of Asimov's robots books.
For pure space opera swashbuckling, you can't go past E E "Doc" Smith and his 'Lensman' or 'Skylark' series. They haven't been in print for a while, so you'll need to scour the second hand bookshops.

Other excellent authors are Larry Niven (Of Ringworld fame, which inspired 'Halo'), Stephen Baxter ('Ring', The maifold series, or 'The time ships'), Greg Bear ('Eon'), and of course there's always Frank Herbert's Dune.

I really liked Sphere and The Cobra Event. Or 1984 is pretty cool. I really don't read much science fiction.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is one of my favorite books of all time. It's a fairly quick, easy read but there is a whole series of books that come after it that are all excellent in their own way. I highly recommend it.
